We are Chris and Ethna Parker; Christian missionaries living, working and serving God in beautiful Iceland. We have been involved with Iceland for almost twenty years, so we are well-placed to answer most of your questions about this awesome country.
Our house is a two-storey modern family home, built for Icelandic poet Guðmunder Danielsson in the 60s. Situated in the oldest and coolest part of town, we are surrounded by trees and just a stone’s throw from the magnificent Ölfusá river. We are also just minutes away from the town center which is buzzing with cafes, stores and all the local amenities, including the newly refurbished swimming pool which includes a sauna, steam room, multiple indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs and cold tubs.
Guest accommodation is situated primarily on the ground floor of this two-story house. The guest accommodation comprises one double and one extra large bedroom, a compact, but well stocked shower room and a utility room. The utility room serves as a laundry room and a mini kitchen where you have access to a washing machine, tumble dryer, and a fridge. The second bedroom will be available to book towards the end of 2017.
You have everything you need to prepare and serve a snack or light meal, i.e. microwave combination oven, kettle, toaster, coffee machine, french press, toastie maker and waffle maker. The kitchen area is kept well stocked with hot and cold refreshments. Every morning there will always be something available for you to make a light meal, i.e. freshly made waffle mix for you to whip up some fresh waffles and/or bread so that you can make some toast, alongside good filter coffee and a selection of teas. In exchange, we ask simply that you wash and dry your dishes and leave the area clean for other guests.
You are very welcome to join the family upstairs for a chat or simply enjoy the privacy of the guest accommodation downstairs.
The two bedrooms are light and airy. Bedroom one has a double bed with a memory foam mattress, two bedside cabinets, bedside lights, a clock, a chest of drawers and a wardrobe. The second bedroom is an extra large room with twin beds that can be set up as either two singles or as a double. There are two bedside cabinets, bedside lights, a clock, a chest of drawers, a wardrobe and a double sofabed.
We have all those little extras you need while on holiday, i.e. shampoo, conditioner, etc, a hairdryer and international travel plug adapters.
It is advisable to bring comfortable eye masks for sleeping from May through until September, as the sun only briefly dips below the horizon.
Selfoss is a small town in Southern Iceland on the banks of the Ölfusá river. It is the perfect base from which to explore all that Southern Iceland has to offer, i.e. Gullfoss and Geysir, lava caves, museums, river walks, geothermal parks, hiking trails, natural hot springs and so much more. And, when you come home, exhausted after a day of sightseeing, you can chill out in the local swimming pool, which is open all year round and boasts indoor and outdoor geothermally heated pools, hot pots, cold pots, a steam room and a sauna. We are just minutes away from the local cafes/restaurants and from one of the loveliest glacial-fed rivers in Iceland.
If you come during the winter months, it is the perfect place for catching a view of the northern lights. Don’t forget to download your northern lights app before you arrive, so that you can be continuously updated on potential sightings!
This is a non-smoking and alcohol-free house. If you enjoy late night parties and talking into the wee hours of the morning…this is probably not the house for you 🙂
No unauthorized guests.
No third party bookings.
It is customary in Icelandic homes to remove your shoes in the vestibule before you enter the main part of the house. Be assured, however, you won’t feel the cold. Our house is heated with geothermal water, which means it is super cozy all year round.
We would appreciate your help in keeping shared areas clean at all times. For example, if you use the utility/kitchen, please leave it clean and ready for the next guest. In the same spirit, you are very welcome to use our BBQ during the summer months. However, please ensure you leave it clean and ready for the next guest.
Please do not place wet washing (including towels) on the radiator in your bedroom as this could cause damp/mold. There are clothes airers available for drying items. Clothes left on the clothes airer dry overnight. The tumble dryer can be used to finish drying clothes if your time is tight (winter months only).
We are a green household and appreciate you helping us with this by:
* Switching off lights and electrical appliances after use and unplug if possible.
* Using the recycle bags provided by the front door for glass, plastic bottles, and paper/cardboard. Please rinse and empty glass or plastic items before placing in the bag.
Please be considerate when leaving/entering the property and close internal doors quietly as others may be sleeping or working.
In relation to the Shower Room:
* Leave the shower/toilet room window open all the time, including during showering.
* After showering, please wipe excess water from the shower screen and floor with the wiper provided and leave the door open until the room has thoroughly dried (about 15 minutes).
* Please, please close toilet seat and lid after use 🙂
